The Atlantic Coast Conference is a conference participating in the NCAA's Division I, with member institutions in Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. It was founded in 1953, when seven schools split off from the Southern Conference primarily in response to that conference's ban on postseason play.
The ACC is traditionally perceived as the strongest conference in college basketball. It also features some of the strongest academic institutions in Division I.
